A great story from last week –
Sometimes we just need other people. People who will encourage us, challenge us to be our best, and most importantly believe in us. Those kind of people are hard to come by, most people would look at Phil and discourage him from trying to ride a skateboard, for obvious reasons – he’s 79. I can tell you Phil believes in himself; he is out there almost every day doing his strengthening & balancing routine. He’s never actually been on his skateboard though. By his own admission, he’s too scared to try.
Having gone through a very rough & challenging year alone, I understand how much it means to have someone who believes in you. As crazy or ill-advised as Phil’s dream is – I believe in him because I’ve been there.
I saw Phil at the park and listened to him tell me how afraid he was of getting on his skateboard and how he couldn’t get over the fear of it and I said, ‘Phil go get your gear and put it on and get your skateboard, I know you can do this.’ ‘You don’t have to be afraid, I’ve got you.’
I told him we were going to get on that skateboard and just roll it back and forth and it would be fine, I wasn’t going to let him fall.
It took a bit of coaxing, but he did it. Just about 5 minutes on it – but Phil was so happy, and truthfully it was the greatest feeling in the world for me. I got way more than I bargained for going to the park that day.
