WORD OF THE DAY (WOD):
Greatness Within: Part 1
“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works…” (EPH 2:10 AMP)
I don’t often quote from the amplified version of the bible, my go-to translation is the New Internation Version (NIV) and for the literal Word, the New King James Version (NKJV). However, I think the AMP version of EPH 2:10 says exactly what I want to convey in this message – that we are all “His own master work, a work of art”
Growing up Catholic I did not receive this message. It was reinforced on me that I was a flawed, sinful person. Literally speaking, this is correct – we all have sin. We all have flaws. But we are all so much more than that, and not only does that not define us, it’s not the foundation of who we are.
That is where my beliefs diverge, and it’s taken me a very long time to reverse the idea that at my foundation I am a collection of flaws & sin. What a terrible message to give to someone – especially a child. There’s no doubt in my mind that that contributed to the 50 year war I fought within myself over spirituality.
This is the first in the new series of sermons directed at the message God wants me to convey. The message I will preach is for everyone. I know this in my heart. I also know that moving forward there will be two versions of this message. The first is what you are reading here. It’s the literary version. The expanded, annotated version of what I give in person. They are both the same message, yet both are different.
Anyone that has met me in person knows how passionate I am about my calling. When we wrap up our Armor UP training sessions, I invite anyone wants to stick around for a reading of the “WOD”, the Word of the day – i.e., this message. To be honest, I’ve been so frustrated and disappointed lately with this approach that involves me reading this sermon off of a sheet of paper.
In truth the message, while it was great, it never really resonated within me, I couldn’t put my passion behind it. I wasn’t a message that aligned with who I am on the inside, I could not unlock that for the reading of the Word.
Now I can. And I don’t need a sheet of paper to deliver it, because I can speak it from my heart. I deliver it with passion, fire the way it’s supposed to be delivered. It’s what I’ve always wanted. And I’m thankful to God for that.
That said, lets dive into it.
The way God created you is not a mistake. You need to see yourself as He sees you.
That core statement comes from a belief I share with Pastor Erwin Raphael McManus – That if God is great, you are great too.
In philosophical terms that statement could be called ‘circular reasoning’ and is an example of a logical fallacy. Its where the reasoner begins with what they are trying to end with. The components of a circular argument usually sound logically valid because if the premises are true, the conclusion must also be true, and the argument comes back to the beginning without having proven itself.
Here’s the fascinating part, it only takes a single Bible verse and some faith in God for that statement to be unequivocally proven and throw aside its circular fallacy. The verse is from the book of Genesis:
“So, God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (GEN 1:27 NIV)
This is one of the single greatest truths found in the Bible.
If you could live your life everyday believing this verse, how would your life be different?
You see I’m absolutely convinced that God is great. That should be pretty obvious if you read the posts on this blog. But maybe you’d be a little surprised if I told you that you’re great or that you have greatness within you? Its not really the message I’ve heard in Christianity very often, at least in my experience.
But that makes perfect sense to me because you see if God is great then everything he creates is great. Because if you’re great, you can’t create something that’s just okay… Right? And if God is great and he created you in his image in his image and likeness;
Then he created you with greatness within you.
Trust me, God’s not worried about your greatness because your greatness is just a reflection of his greatness…
He’s not up there going “oh no they’re going to be too great.” So much so that you’re diminishing His greatness, but in fact when you live beneath the greatness that God has placed in you – you diminish the image of God because you don’t properly reflect who He is and who He created you to be. That’s important.
There’s this dilemma though, because we have this belief that every human being has greatness within them, but the reality is that very few people ever actually live out that greatness. Most of us will live our lives being haunted by a greatness we have never achieved or attained or accessed within us.
I know that there are some of you that have this sense that there’s something more in you than you can access. I lived my whole life feeling that.
That there’s something beautiful, something extraordinary, yes even greatness inside of you – but somehow it’s elusive to you and so you’ve lived a life that’s less than the life you were created to live…
So why is this happening? How is it possible that our God could create such greatness within us and yet we would live a life that’s beneath that greatness?
Part of that is because of the implications of our language of our faith. We talk about things like grace and faith, and it oftentimes makes us passive about life. And that’s a dangerous trap to fall into. What I have found is that there is a very fine line between having absolute faith and a call to action.
You know, God will do it…
If it’s supposed to happen, it’ll happen…
Have you ever had people tell you that?
Have you ever said that to yourself?
You know, if it’s meant to be it’ll be…
I believe those statements one hundred percent, and they are the foundation of my own faith, but taken in the wrong context they encourage a passiveness in life that will end up leading you nowhere.
The apostles did not sit around on their couch watching YouTube sermons expecting miracles to happen. In fact, almost all of them were eventually put to death as a result of their faith in Jesus Christ. And we as Christians can’t put $5 in the collection bin? Or have trouble giving up a single sinful behavior for 40 days out of an entire year?
That’s setting the bar pretty low.
You see its this hidden passiveness in faith floating around out there. It’s one that inadvertently encourages our own apathy & mediocrity and inability to access the greatness within us. Have you ever noticed that the people who say, “You know, if God wants it to happen it will happen…,” and that’s about as far as their effort goes, well it seems like God never wants anything to happen for them.
But the person who steps into their faith with intention and takes responsibility takes ownership of their faith and the greatness within them it’s amazing how often God shows up for them.
Ownership…Repeat that. Because that word should be a manta for your life. It’s not a concept that is mutually exclusive of faith, trust me. But it’s the last thing you’ll hear preached – taking responsibility for your actions.
This message, my message, is for those who have come to God, who want to realize a life where their dreams become a reality and their life allows them to live with the means to serve God & serve others. That should be all of our dreams. To get to a point in life where we wake up and say, “How many people can I help today?” We wake up earlier than others, we go beyond the status quo, we put in the extra effort, because it matters.
You can accept the status quo. You can embrace mediocrity. You can choose to be average. But when you EMBRACE the call of God – All of that goes out the window.
You have to walk away from the status quo. You cannot allow mediocrity to define you. When you accept the call of God, you have accepted a call to greatness, and nothing less will do!
What it takes to be great is an internal, self-motivating drive. It’s a fire inside of you that cannot and will not be put out. You get up in the morning because your life MATTERS AND YOU MUST DO SOMETHING.
Because we recognize that a life of self-sacrifice & self-disciple are the pathway to our dreams & our vision. Everyone should have a vision. And everyone should work everyday of their life with that vision as their goal.
You have to come to a place in your life where you realize the greatness that God placed in you was never for you. The greatness that God placed in you was supposed to be your gift to the world.
When I was saved, I didn’t know it at the time, but all I did was accept a calling we all have. We all have a calling. And when we talk about calling here’s the thing..
There’s only one calling… and that’s come and follow Jesus. And if you follow that calling He will LEAD you into your PURPOSE & into your intention.
What my goal is for this series is to point out the ways that we can achieve our PURPOSE and intention.
So today I want to talk about how we make decisions in life and what are the implications of those decisions. Everything we do (or don’t do) starts with a YES or NO.
Everything you say YES to is you saying NO to something else… There is nothing you say YES to that doesn’t cost you something. And you need to pay attention to what you’re saying YES to because you may actually be saying NO to your future.
Because people who achieve greatness make a decision to say YES to living a life that is self-sacrificing and that has deferred gratification. Just because it brings you pleasure doesn’t mean it gives you PURPOSE.
If you keep living your life for what you want today, you will not be creating the life you’ll want tomorrow, and without trying to over moralize things I’m telling you you’re going to keep repeating your past and keep repeating the YES’s of your past and wonder where your future went.
I want you to think on that today, about the implications of what you say YES to and make sure you’re saying YES to the right things, and YES to your future and not your past.
